FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS TAI CHI?

Tai Chi, short for Tai Chi Chuan (Taijiquan), is an “internal” martial art from China, with several major branches. Yang Style is slow, meditative when practicing. Yet, quick and effective when used skillfully.

“Today, tai chi has spread worldwide. Most modern styles of tai chi trace their development to at least one of the five traditional schools: Chen, Yang, Wu (Hao), Wu and Sun. All of the former, in turn, trace their historical origins to Chen Village.” Read more from Wikipedia.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF TAI CHI?

Tai Chi has many benefits including improved physical and mental health.

"This gentle form of exercise can help maintain strength, flexibility, and balance, and could be the perfect activity for the rest of your life.” Read more from Harvard Medical School.

DO I NEED TO BE AT A CERTAIN ATHLETIC LEVEL TO TRAIN WITH TAI CHI IQUITOS?

Tai Chi is recommended for all fitness levels with a few exceptions.

“Although tai chi is generally safe, women who are pregnant or people with joint problems, back pain, fractures, severe osteoporosis or a hernia should consult their health care provider before trying tai chi. Modification or avoidance of certain postures may be recommended.” Read more from the Mayo Clinic.

GET TO KNOW ME

Your Martial Arts Instructor

Over the decades, I have sampled a variety of martial arts, enough to know that Tai Chi Chuan (Taijiquan) continues to be my favorite. For a total of eight years, I studied Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan, in group classes and with private tutors. I have also practiced Tai Chi Chuan on my own, when no teacher was available, for several years. Specifically, The Traditional Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan 85 (88-108) Form, plus two styles derived from it. The Cheng Man Ching 37 Form and The Simplified Tai Chi 24 Form.

Two of my teachers were Chinese Masters. Some had a police/military background. Some emphasized the health aspects. Tai Chi Chuan does not have a belt ranking system. Either you have certification to teach or you don’t.  Beware of “Masters” without proper certification or who have only a few years of actual training. I am not a “Master,” but I have certification to teach from a Chinese Master, a  12th Generation Linage holder. (View certificate below.)
